Why Financial Independence Is Essential for Every Woman’s Freedom

podcast

Women have more freedom, power, choice, and agency than at any other time in modern history.

But a woman’s freedom remains theoretical until she has the financial power to act on her choices.

You can legally leave the marriage, start the business, decline motherhood, become a mother on your own terms, refuse the degrading job, or build an entirely different life.

But can you afford to?

That is the question beneath nearly every conversation about female freedom.

Women’s choices are changing

The evidence reveals a sweeping generational transformation:

  • In 1975, the median American woman married for the first time at 21.1. By 2025, that age had risen to 28.4.
  • Nearly 80% of women born between 1940 and 1944 were married by age 25. Among women born between 1990 and 1994, only 30% were.
  • In 1968, 81.5% of adults ages 25–34 lived with a spouse. By 2018, that figure had fallen to 40.3%.
  • By 2021, one in four 40-year-olds had never married.
  • Among childless adults under 50, the percentage who said they were unlikely ever to have children increased from 37% in 2018 to 47% in 2023.
  • Among women in that group, 64% said a major reason was that they simply did not want children.
  • Women 30 and older accounted for approximately 30% of births in 1990. By 2023, they accounted for 51.4%.
  • In 2025, the provisional U.S. fertility rate fell again to 53.1 births per 1,000 women ages 15–44.

Women are making different choices because, for the first time, we have greater authority over whether we marry, whether we become mothers, how we earn money, and how we construct our lives.

But that authority is astonishingly new.

Female financial sovereignty is still in its infancy

The FDA approved the first oral contraceptive in 1960. Contraception rights were extended to unmarried people in 1972.

In 1974, the Equal Credit Opportunity Act made it illegal for lenders to discriminate based on sex or marital status. Before then, women were routinely denied independent credit or required to involve a husband or male cosigner.

In 1988, the Women’s Business Ownership Act removed significant barriers to women seeking business credit—including state-law requirements that could force a woman to obtain a male relative’s signature.

I was eight years old.

Women have not had thousands of years to learn how to create, hold, protect, and wield money independently. We have had a few decades.

Of course we still carry fear, shame, confusion, under-earning, overwork, and inherited beliefs about who should control the money. The laws changed faster than our conditioning did.

Money creates safety and security

I have always taught that women require Four Keys to feel fully satisfied: safety, security, trust, and cherishing.

Healthy masculine protection and providership can support a woman’s safety and security in extraordinary ways. I would gladly welcome more of both from an exceptional masculine partner because doing everything alone is fucking exhausting.

But today, a man’s provision can be an addition to a woman’s life—not the condition upon which she is permitted to have one.

When that partnership is absent, money becomes the infrastructure beneath her safety and security.

Money allows a woman to live somewhere safe. Leave someone dangerous. Access medical care. Raise children without remaining trapped. Recover from catastrophe. Protect her time. Refuse exploitation. Build a business. Choose a partner because she loves him—not because she cannot survive without him.

That is why financial independence is not merely about accumulating wealth.

It is about having meaningful choices.

Your freedom must be funded

Women now possess legal rights our grandmothers could barely imagine. But having the right to earn, own, keep, and wield money is not the same as exercising it.

The women before us opened the door.

We must walk through it.

You are already sitting on a gold mine of knowledge, wisdom, experience, creativity, and skill. Turning that value into money is not greedy, unfeminine, or selfish. It is how you fund your safety, your security, your contribution, and your freedom.

Your life belongs to you now.

If you know you have something valuable but haven’t figured out how to turn it into a profitable business, book a call with me. Let’s uncover your gold mine and build the financial sovereignty required to create your life on your terms.
