Why are more women staying single, marrying later, postponing motherhood, or deciding not to have children at all?

The answer is larger than dating apps, career ambition, or a shortage of “good men.”

We are witnessing a wholesale renegotiation of women’s lives.

In 1975, the median American woman first married at 21.1. By 2025, that age had risen to 28.4.

Nearly 80% of women born between 1940 and 1944 were married by age 25. Among women born between 1990 and 1994, only 30% were.

This is not a demographic footnote.

It is what happens when women finally possess authority over the two forces that historically controlled our choices: reproduction and money.

In Episode 67 of The Satisfied Woman Podcast, Alanna Kaivalya, Ph.D., examines the end of the old marriage bargain—and what women now require from love.

YOU’LL DISCOVER:

• Why women are marrying approximately seven years later
• Why fewer women are marrying or having children
• How financial independence changed heterosexual relationships
• The historical bargain women are no longer willing to accept
• Why modern men must offer more than a paycheck
• How money gives women the power to choose relationships freely
• The Four Keys women require: safety, security, trust, and being cherished
• Why today’s women have a responsibility to exercise our power, choice, and agency
• How to recognize whether a relationship is capable of meeting the new standard

THE OLD MARRIAGE BARGAIN

For most of modern history, marriage was not simply a romantic choice for women.

It was the institution through which women gained access to safety, housing, money, social legitimacy, protection, and security.

Women exchanged fertility, sexuality, domestic labor, emotional labor, creativity, devotion, and children for financial provision and protection.

Those were never equal terms because women could not safely refuse them.

Without reliable access to money, credit, employment, or reproductive control, a woman’s survival depended heavily upon securing and keeping a man. Her ability to challenge his behavior—or leave him—was severely limited.

Then women gained authority over reproduction and money.

We could control pregnancy. Earn money. Hold credit. Build businesses. Own property. Survive outside marriage.

The entire heterosexual contract changed.

WOMEN NO LONGER NEED THE OLD DEAL

Women no longer need men in the way women historically needed them.

That does not mean women no longer want partnership.

It means money alone is no longer sufficient compensation for a woman’s body, labor, devotion, or life.

We want partnership.

Emotional safety.

Presence.

Character.

Trust.

Support.

Cherishing.

We want men who make our lives better—not men whose presence merely grants us permission to survive.

Women are not destroying marriage.

We are requiring marriage to become worthy of women.

WHAT DOES MODERN LOVE REQUIRE?

A modern relationship must offer what the old bargain did not.

A woman needs emotional safety. She needs a partner whose actions create security. She needs to trust herself, trust what she sees, and trust the man beside her. She needs to be cherished by a capable masculine partner who values her femininity, intuition, needs, and life.

If you are fixing, managing, waiting, proving, or trying to become desirable enough for love to work, there is a pattern underneath it.

If you are doing all the emotional labor, initiating every important conversation, managing your partner’s development, and holding the relationship together, you do not have the new marriage deal.

You have inherited the labor of the old one without receiving its former protections.

The free Self to Soulmate Workbook will help you identify the pattern, clarify what you require from a capable partner, and decide what must change.
